Live Tweeting at a Conference

Has anyone here tried Live Tweeting? Let me be the first (or 100th...) to say, it's great fun, and it really engages your followers. Let's use the National Relocation Conference in Orlando, Florida this year as our example event.

I recommend starting off on the right foot by telling all of your twitter followers that you plan on live tweeting from the event. Use a Hashtag in your tweets pertaining to the event. Let them know that due to the high volumn of the tweets you will be sending, that you are setting up a special dedicated account just for the live event (We'll call this your "event account"

Choose a Twitter Handle (name) that pertains to both the event and you. My personal twitter handle is: JacyCole, so I would use JacyGoesRelo or something catchy. For Hashtags, I'd use something like #ReloFL or #Relo2010. In order to set up your second acct, you may want to make a quick free email address on Yahoo or Hotmail. This will filter your junkmail and is great to have for all of your social media sites really to keep your main acct. from getting bogged down.

On the days leading up to the event, it is okay to post reminders on your main account about the event, but make sure to post on your "event account". Post flyers, links and announcements. Videos and photos of past events or of the key speakers can create great buzz too (Don't forget those Hashtags!!)

On the day of the event, you want to post descriptively, letting the "reader/viewer" really feel engaged in the event. If you have a Droid, i-Phone, i-touch, ETC, you have the advantage of practically live streaming the event. You can post photos and videos straight to your Twitter using tools like:Seesmic. (Seesmic is currently my app of choice) You can also be cross-posting these to your Facebook, Blogger, Flickr, and more. There are so many tools out there, it's really about finding what is the best fit for you.

No smart phone access? You can still tweet in updates, and I recommend capturing pics and videos with your phone or a digital camera and uploading them at the earliest opportunity that you have.
Post important quotes from Key speakers, especially if video isn't allowed.

If you see a booth that is especially entertaining, don't be shy about promoting their business and sending out links to their websites. This is all about engaging your followers and giving them an all-access feel so that they keep checking in for more.

If you run in to others who are tweeting updates, recommend your Hashtag and Re-tweet some of their updates and they are likely to do the same. If you see someone else online who is tweeting from the event, send replies to them using the @ function. (For example, to message me at work, you'd type @amouravideoprod in your twitter update)

When you create live events like this, using a separate account, you don't exhaust your current followers, but you give them a chance to tune in to the event if they'd like. You can also generate a great "followership" from live tweeting. Make sure at the end of each day or session of the event that you post your main account name so that your new followers can find you.

Also, if you have a particularly exciting sound bite, video, quote ETC, you can Retweet yourself through your main account, (I recommend limiting the times you do this, but definitely at least twice a day if the event is multiple days)

Another helpful App: Tweetsay Lets you record up to ten seconds of audio by cell phone and automatically posts it to your twitter acct.

Remember, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS use those Hashtags! :-)

Thanks, and Happy Live-Tweeting!!!
